No one knew the old woman's name. She had been seen down there around the Mohawk River before, but she always seemed to be on her way to some place.
She didn't act old. In fact, she didn't act any particular way, except very much alive and curious. Sometimes she carried a book and what looked like a small picnic lunch. Other times her darting eyes were following birds near the river's bank. Those who noticed her, like Ted Haskin of Schenectady, soon got the notion she pretty much did what pleased her.
Then, of course, she had wheels.
It was almost smack dab in the middle of the 41-mile Mohawk-Hudson ...
