Engineers at General Electric have developed a computer program that they say may save millions of dollars for utilities.

"It may not be generally known, but 5 percent to 10 percent of all the fuel burned by an average electric utility is used up just transporting electricity from the power station to the customers, mostly through transmission and distribution lines," said Robert Degeneff, manager of the GE section that developed the computer program.

"A typical utility spends $750 million each year on fuel, and if 5 percent is used up transporting electricity, that's $37 million a year used up by what we call 'system losses,'" he added.
