Shirley and Gary Nelson were not experts in construction when they decided to erect a log home on 27 acres on West Mountain in Queensbury.

Yet the transformation from interested homesteaders to accomplished builders didn't take long.

The couple, with help from friends and relatives, last winter constructed a 1,900-square-foot house using a $33,000 kit in just three months.
