First, it was a rush of new competitors, then a new bitterness to their competition, then layoffs, cutbacks and finally last week talk of takeovers.
Another slump in the computer industry, a further fiasco in steel? Not this time.
This time it's a contraction in televangelism, a shakeout on the road to heaven.
To be sure, last week's battle among the prime-time preachers had plenty of the kind of Bible thumping that seems a far cry from business basics. But by week's end, patterns were emerging that economists, analysts and longtime observers said looked very much like an old-time product war.
