Sep. 16--A second union was born at America West Airlines on Thursday with the backing of 59 percent of the airline's flight attendants. The vote was announced to cheers and champagne toasts at the local headquarters of the Association of Flight Attendants, or AFA, which campaigned for six years to organize the Phoenix-based airline, which once prided itself for being non-union.
The AFL-CIO union received 1,034 votes of a possible 1,740, reflecting many of the attendants' frustrations over pay, work rules and job security. The month-long voting process was overseen by the National Mediation Board in Washington, D.C.
