Sometimes recognition comes slowly. Two hundred and five years since his birth, 125 years since his death, 13 years since the federal government commemorated his life and work, and nearly five years behind schedule, Martin Van Buren's Kinderhook mansion is about to become a completely restored National Historic Site.
The finishing touches are being put to the maize-colored house on Route 9H, just south of the village of Kinderhook, where the eighth president of the United States spent his retirement years.
