Albany Medical Center announced Thursday that it has begun an in vitro fertilization program designed to give infertile couples new chances of having a child.
The center's in vitro procedure involves removing one or more eggs from a woman, fertilizing them in the laboratory and then implanting them in the uterus to establish pregnancy.
Albany Memorial Hospital opened the first in vitro fertilization center in the Capital District this spring and Bellevue Hospital in Schenectady runs a program in conjunction with a downstate hospital, said Elmer Streeter, a spokesman for Albany Medical Center.
