The South African government Tuesday approved a regional peace plan for southwestern Africa - already accepted by Angola and Cuba - that will lead to the withdrawal of 50,000 Cuban troops from Angola and independence for Namibia, which has been occupied by South Africa for 73 years.
Following the Cabinet decision, Foreign Minister Roelof F. Botha said he expects that a formal, "tentative" agreement on a timetable for the Cuban pullout will be signed by the three parties in Brazzaville, Congo, within a week or two.
