The army opened fire and killed at least 15 people when thousands of anti-government demonstrators defied curfews today in three towns in the Sinhalese heartland, police said.
Thirty others were injured, Colombo police said.
A military spokesman in Colombo confirmed soldiers had "taken action" against violent demonstrations, but he said he did not know how many people were killed or injured. He spoke on condition of anonymity in keeping with regulations.
