In the first such plea by a Yugoslav leader in 20 years, President Raif Dizdarevic made a nationally broadcast speech Sunday appealing for calm and an end to demonstrations that have shaken the country.
Dizdarevic delivered the 35-minute speech over state-run radio and television stations in the wake of violent mass protests during the weekend.
But, only shortly after his speech, Belgrade Radio reported that about 10,000 people demonstrated Sunday evening in the southern Yugoslav town of Niksic protesting use of force by police over the weekend.
