Until recently, the medical community believed blacks had lower rates of heart disease than whites, even though blacks suffered more high blood pressure.
But a long-running study is leading researchers at Mary Imogene Bassett Hospital Research Institute in Cooperstown to conclude that blacks have just as much if not more heart disease than whites.
The research is especially important to the state because it has the highest rate of ischemic heart disease in the country, and Health Department researchers are searching for explanations. Ischemic heart disease, resulting from clogged arteries, is the cause of ...
