This is how U.S. News arrived at the rankings for its eighth annual edition of America's Best Colleges:
As in the past, some 1,400 accredited four-year colleges and universities were divided into 14 categories based upon classifications maintained by the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching. To simplify the groupings, U.S. News combined several categories and subdivided some by region.
