Rains on Monday worsened the plight of millions of people driven from their homes by the worst flooding in the history of Bangladesh.
Unofficial estimates and news reports of the death toll rose to more than 1,200. The government put the number of fatalities at 444, but conceded the figure probably was too low.
Officials said the most urgent task was the distribution of safe drinking water to the affected areas, where water systems have been contaminated and wells flooded.
