As a boy in Harlem, Max Roach papered the walls of his bedroom with a constellation of drummers.

Here were Baby Dodds, Zutty Singleton, Big Sid Catlett and Gene Krupa. As his gods looked on, and before he dressed and ate breakfast, Roach climbed on his stool and went to work with his sticks.
