Pakistan's longest-serving military ruler, President Mohammad Zia ul-Haq, was killed Wednesday along with U.S. Ambassador Arnold L. Raphel when the president's plane exploded in mid-air moments after takeoff from a remote desert town. The government said it did not rule out the possibility of sabotage.
After a marathon Cabinet meeting, a state of emergency was declared throughout the country and the chairman of Pakistan's national senate, Ghulam Ishaq Khan, was installed as acting president.
