The top military command in Pakistan "very strongly suspects foul play," possibly a bomb or a missile, was responsible for the midair explosion Wednesday that killed President Zia ul-Haq, U.S. Ambassador Arnold L. Raphel and 10 of Zia's top generals, the chief of the Pakistani air force said Thursday.
The military's preliminary investigation has found that mechanical failure "could not have caused the explosion" that destroyed Zia's C-130 air force transport, Air Marshal Hakimullah Khan said in a brief interview as coffins containing the bodies of the dead arrived in the capital.
