The speed with which Democrats named a candidate to succeed U.S. Rep. Samuel S. Stratton showed the power of the Albany County Democratic Committee and the ability of committee Chairman J. Leo O'Brien to exercise it adroitly.
The rapid replacement of Stratton with state Assemblyman Michael R. McNulty of Green Island as the party's candidate in the 23rd Congressional District also showed the planning that had occurred months before by O'Brien and other area Democratic county chairmen.
