Ivan Lendl said he wasn't crazy about being here in the first place. He proved it Wednesday by making an early and feeble exit in the $602,500 Volvo International tennis tournament.

Lendl, the world's No.1 player but soon to become No.2, shrugged his way to elimination, losing 6-2, 6-3 to little-known Roger Smith of the Bahamas in the second round.

"You just can't play well all the time," Lendl said. "It has to do with the number of years on the tour."

Lendl, 28, has been ranked No.1 since Sept.9, 1985. But when the new Association of Tennis Professionals' rankings come out next week, he'll slip to No.2 ...
