Iran on Sunday accepted Iraq's compromise proposal for a cease-fire in the Persian Gulf war to be followed immediately by direct talks.
United Nations Secretary General Javier Perez de Cuellar said he would announce a date today
for the start of a truce in the eight-year-old war.
"In principle, I shall announce a cease-fire tomorrow," the secretary general said after meeting informally with the Security Council Sunday night. "I informed the council that the two sides agree to a cease-fire and direct talks under my auspices."
