Twenty years later, William Radigan still smells the tear gas when recalling the tumultuous 1968 Democratic National Convention in Chicago.

Most of the nation was watching as supporters of Sen. Eugene McCarthy, like Radigan, joined other anti-war and anti-establishment types to protest in the streets and parks of the city. For four days at the end of August, party regulars like Ratigan's own mayor, Erastus Corning 2nd, gathered to nominate Hubert Horatio Humphrey for president.

"I got tear gassed many times," Radigan said, recounting how he, at age 17, had joined McCarthy's anti- Vietnam bandwagon.
