It's impossible to do a study of Lillian or Dorothy Gish without doing a study of D.W. Griffith as well.
The director, who made stars of the sisters through dozens of his silent films, was a pioneer in the industry and they were his scouting team.
No wonder, then, that Lillian spends much of her time on "American Masters" (Monday, 9 p.m., WMHT, Channel 17) discussing Griffith's
work and career, from his beginnings with the Biograph Co. to his death near poverty in 1948.
