Kaaterskill Falls tumbles down a rocky ravine in the Catskill Mountains a half-mile uphill from one of twisting Route 23A's more tortuous curves.
A brisk 30-minute climb from the highway will bring you to a flat rock, a perfect spot to rest and look up at the narrow two-tiered stream of water.
It is a popular and well-known hiking spot, so those who live nearby were perplexed and amused by a report, "Searching for Kaaterskill Falls," (New Yorker, Aug. 3, 1987), in which the author, Naomi Bliven, goes on at some length about her inability to find the falls and to hike the trail to the viewing point.
