The Jewish community ushered in the year 5748 Wednesday evening as it began the celebration of Rosh Hashana - the Jewish new year - with prayer, self-reflection and observance of tradition.
To the secular world, New Year's celebrations evoke images of late-night parties and soon-broken resolutions. But Rosh Hashana is based on different traditions.
"It's a different concept of what you do to honor a new year," said Rabbi Beverly Magidson of Congregation Beth Shalom, a Conservative temple in Clifton Park.
