Hurricane Gilbert pounded ancient Mayan ruins and emptied resort hotels of Mexico's Yucatan Peninsula with winds that gusted to 218 mph Wednesday as it swept toward the Gulf of Mexico and a rendezvous with the Texas coast.
Gilbert left the island nation of Jamaica, where it struck Monday, with 500,000 of its 2.3 million people homeless, government officials said late Wednesday.
Forecasters said a direct hit on Texas would cause "catastrophic damage."
The National Weather Service issued a hurricane watch for the coasts of Texas and northeast Mexico and warned residents to be ready for "quick action" today ...
