A late-afternoon sun perched atop the Catskills gave the sky an orange glow and bleached the earth between the rows of trees as Vincent Hansen ended another day among the apples.
Walking slowly down the gravel road that snakes through the orchard, he spotted a friendly face outside a spartan cement-block building he calls home for eight weeks a year.
"It's good to see you," he said in a Jamaican accent as he spotted the Rev. Gail Keeney-Mulligan. "Is the pastor coming again? I sent her a postcard from Jamaica."
