It would be wonderful to be able to say that "84 Charing Cross Road" does for correspondence what "My Dinner With Andre" did for conversation.
We've fallen out of love with words - reading them and writing them - and it's an inestimable loss. "84 Charing Cross Road" wasn't a very good play, but at least it did give an inkling of how lives can come together, even intertwine although they never physically touch, just from warm, witty, heartfelt communication.
The drama celebrates a New Yorker's 20-year, long-distance love affair with a quaint London book shop, its inhabitants and inventory.
