The two leading rivals in Tuesday's presidential primary contest are waging a New York City-based battle for a small but possibly critical slice of New York's ethnic pie - the Hispanic vote.
Polls show the Rev. Jesse Jackson holding an edge among Hispanics, a group that in the 1984 Democratic primary favored then-Vice President Walter Mondale.
However, Spanish-speaking Masachusetts Gov. Michael Dukakis vows to pose a strong challenge with an appeal based on some of the same issues, oriented toward the poor as Jackson's, such as housing.
