Let's consider what the railroad map of North America might look like five years from now:
--We have Burlington Northern and Santa Fe wanting to marry.
--We have Kansas City Southern and Illinois Central going to the altar.
--We have CP Rail wanting the eastern lines of Canadian National, including Grand Trunk Western.
--We have Norfolk Southern and Conrail perhaps wanting to get together (something NS wanted years ago, if you'll recall).
--We have Union Pacific already before the Interstate Commerce Commission with a case for permission to control Chicago & North Western.
Let's assume, for the purpose of idle-hours ...
