While it seems like the issue of the '80s, food irradiation is not new.

The process was patented in 1930 by the French. American research began in the 1940s and in 1963, the FDA approved irradiation for wheat and wheat flour. Potatoes were approved in 1964, spices in 1983, pork in 1985 and fresh fruits and vegetables in 1986.

About 25 countries have approved commercial irradiation of a variety of products but it is common only in a few, including Japan, the Netherlands and South Africa, according to the Food Marketing Institute in Washington, D.C.
