The Capital District's "snow drought," which had left the region with half its usual January snowfall, ended abruptly Tuesday after as much as 19 inches of snow fell in some places.
While no immediate major storms are forecast, cold temperatures moving in today and tonight will ensure the snow stays around for a while, said Richard Kane, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service at the Albany County Airport.
"In a normal winter we get 16 inches in January," Kane said. "Before Monday we had only eight inches for the month. We had a snow drought until then."
