The state prison system had fewer escapes in 1987 than the year before, with 12 inmates briefly tasting freedom but none bolting from behind the walls of New York's toughest prisons, a spokesman said Tuesday.
Three of the prisoners snuck away from jobs they were assigned outside prison "security perimeters," while another nine fled from minimum- security work camps or work release centers that do not have fences, Commissioner Thomas Coughlin said.
"Not one escape was from inside" a prison fence, said James Flateau, a spokesman for the Department of Correctional Services.
