Jan. 27--SMITHFIELD -- Col. Joseph Bridger, likely one of the wealthiest men in Colonial Virginia, is going to Washington. The bones of Bridger, buried at Historic St. Luke's Church in Smithfield for more than 300 years, will be temporarily exhumed Monday and taken to the Smithsonian Institution for study. Dr. Douglas Owsley, a forensic anthropologist at the Smithsonian, and his team will study the bones for information on Bridger such as his health, diet and build, said Charlotte Klamer, executive director of the historic church in Smithfield.
