Disney's film "The Lion King" was an immediate success. Box office soared, stores moved the inevitable merchandise, soundtracks were swept off the shelves. The film's main characters will soon become household names, and the story will work its way into popular culture and literature. Such is the success of today's blockbusters.
But "The Lion King" is not without its detractors. Commentators have criticized Disney for giving modern expression to an old set of prejudices.
