For the first time, China has succeeded in using a ballistic missile to destroy a satellite _ a test that may launch a space arms race.
Many observers have said China intended to demonstrate its ability to attack satellites, especially U.S. spy satellites.
The experiment surely will lead to a change in the U.S.-China military balance and affect security in East Asia, including Japan.
