Jan. 29--One has to wonder about the state of our society when it becomes newsworthy that people are banding together to do something logical.
That was my first thought when I read last week about a group in St. Paul, Minn., who formed Birthdays Without Pressure, aimed at stopping the elaborate children's birthday parties that border on lunacy.
Some of the stories the group gathered were impressive: a 4-year-old mauled by a cougar that was brought for entertainment at a party. Seven-year-olds picked up in stretch limos. A 6-year-old who felt "ripped off" by not getting good enough treats in his gift bag. For those who ...
