APPLE is the computer-lovers' computer company. Its machines, dating back to the first real PC, the Apple II, in 1977, have typically been a generation ahead of their competitors. Many of the technical innovations Apple introduced a decade ago with its Macintosh are just now reaching the average desktop. But as they do, Apple's weaknesses have become clearer. Its efforts to produce both hardware and software for its idiosyncratic machines have left it dangerously exposed.
