The Ethiopian Revolution, which erupted in 1974 and, some may say, is still continuing twenty years later, was on any showing a major event in the country's long history. The end of imperial rule attracted the attention of a number of European and American commentators. In the immediate aftermath of the change of government Blair Thomson, a radio journalist then recently resident in Addis Ababa, led the way in 1975 with a nostalgic but thrilling little book Ethiopia: The Country that Cut Off its Head.
