Oct. 23--Nearly a year ago, doctors told Corinne Baumgartner she had mesothelioma, an asbestos-caused cancer that was scarring the soft tissue lining the outside of her lungs.
"I was shocked," recalls Baumgartner. The 70-year-old New Brighton woman had never worked with or around asbestos.
But as Baumgartner thought about it, she realized there was one way she could have been exposed: Her ex-husband, Durwood, had been an asbestos insulator during their 23-year marriage. And she had washed his clothes.
"I'd take his dirty clothes and shake them out so the dust wouldn't clog up the washing machine," Baumgartner recalls.
