European Court of Human Rights cannot mitigate Khodorkovsky sentence - Laptev (Part 2)

MOSCOW. Jan 30 (Interfax) - The European Court of Human Rights in Strasbourg has no authority to lessen the sentence handed down to former Yukos head Mikhail Khodorkovsky, Russia's representative at the court Pavel Laptev said on Tuesday.

"The European Court of Human Rights cannot mitigate the sentence handed down to Khodorkovsky because it is beyond the remit of the Court.

This competence lies solely within the jurisdiction of the Russian justice system," Laptev said in comments on an article published in the Kommersant newspaper on Tuesday.
