T his is why state government so urgently needs ethics reform, and of an even more vigorous nature than is currently under consideration. It's so Senate Majority Leader Joseph Bruno, to cite a recent and blatant example, can't dip into his extensive campaign funds to help pay for a lavish Florida vacation.
New York's campaign finance laws need to be sharply refined, so the almost unlimited political contributions that the state allows are restricted to the actual cost of running for a contested political office. And when that happens, New York needs a much more effective agency to enforce those laws.
