GIVEN THAT IT'S FREE, Microsoft Office Accounting Express 2007 is a good choice for morn-and-pop shops that need accounting software on the cheap. If you're new to accounting software in general, it's worth a try.
In our tests, it took nearly an hour to install the program (a 338MB download) under Windows XP. But once we got it running, the clean, flowchart-style interface, which borrows more than a few design concepts from Intuit's QuickBooks, drew us in.
