WASHINGTON _ When Fred Wertheimer, an outspoken and tenacious government critic, steps down as president of Common Cause, he will leave with fond memories.
``I've loved coming into work every day for 24 years,'' Wertheimer said recently. ``In addition to being able to work for something you believe in, for something you feel matters, this has been a lot of fun.''
But he says he has not finished ``challenging the rotten system.''
``I'm not retiring, I'm just moving to the next stage of the battle,'' Wertheimer said in an interview. ``I have some very strong beliefs about what has to be done to make our democracy work, and I'm going to be fighting for those beliefs ...
