More constitutional amendments have been introduced to modify or abolish the Electoral College than for any other purpose. Americans' democratic instincts rebel at the prospect that the Electoral College can choose a president who didn't win the most votes. A proposal in Oregon and elsewhere to bind states' electors to the result of the nationwide popular vote, however, would bring no improvement.
The Electoral College has denied the presidency to the winner of the popular vote four times - five, if Andrew Jackson's loss in 1824 is counted. Freshest in memory is the election of 2000, when George W. Bush won the most electors despite ...
