It is clear that the entrepreneurial spirit runs deep within Maoridom. If you want official confirmation look no further than the Global Entrepreneurship Monitor (GEM) report released in February 2006 which, for the first time, compares Maori entrepreneurs and business owners with non-Maori New Zealanders, and entrepreneurs in other countries.

In the world's largest study of indigenous entrepreneurs, 1004 respondents from the general population were sampled alongside 958 Maori.

What the report found is that ranked on their own, Maori in New Zealand are the world's seventh most entrepreneurial people--exceeding the US, Ireland, Canada and Australia.
