The Quebec government's long-standing support for mining has allowed the province to capitalize on the worldwide resurgence in the resource industry, and not just in terms of exploration. Former producing mines, such as Wesdome's Kiena Mining Complex and Casa Berardi gold mine, are being reopened, and new deposits, such as Xstrata's (formerly Falconbridge's) Perseverance zinc deposit in Matagami, and Agnico Eagle's Goldex, Lapa, and LaRonde II gold projects, are being developed.
