Nov. 1--American Isuzu Motors Inc., distributor of pickups and sport- utility vehicles, will be merged into Brea-based Isuzu Truck of America Inc. as part of a larger consolidation by the Japanese parent that will result in an undisclosed number of layoffs.
Tokyo-based Isuzu Motors Ltd. has been retrenching since its decision this year to abandon car manufacturing and concentrate on the more successful truck side of its business. Its aim is to abandon a volume-based sales strategy and concentrate on increased profitability in narrower markets.
