SAN FRANCISCO -- The reverberations of the U.S. Supreme Court's Kelo v. New London decision will continue to impact California's multibillion-dollar redevelopment sector in 2007, after an eventful 2006.
The 2005 Kelo decision upheld, on federal constitutional grounds, the ability of a local government to use eminent domain to condemn property for the purpose of private development.
While the high court's ruling simply affirmed the existing state of affairs in California, the public reaction to the decision -- which allowed a Connecticut city to condemn a woman's home -- was strong here and elsewhere in the country.
