Feb. 2--Grass clippings could be made into a gasoline substitute, and bacteria might revive abandoned oil fields, under an ambitious research project funded by petroleum giant BP PLC and to be carried out at the University of Illinois and the University of California at Berkeley.
Announced Thursday, the $500 million project to establish the BP Energy Biosciences Institute holds the potential to bring some technology now in the laboratory into the real world, perhaps within a few years.
