Homeopathic remedies have moved beyond health food stores in recent years and can now be purchased at many pharmacies and supermarkets. Like most over-the-counter cold medicines, they became available before proof of efficacy was established. Unlike OTC drugs, they pose no risks.
Homeopathic medicine, though practiced by M.D.s, will approach the treatment of illness in an entirely different manner from conventional medicine. In the case of a cold, the standard medical approach is drying up the mucus membranes, whereas homeopathic practitioners would choose a remedy with the opposite effect.
