The Aggtelek National Park was established in 1985 to protect its meandering caves and peculiar surface formations. Deciduous forest blankets 75% of its area. The clearings are a mosaic of rare plants interspersed with rocky outcrops. Of Europe's 400 bird species, 310 either migrate through or live here. In its 56,000 acres there are over 200 caves. The adjoining park in Slovakia adds another 101,000 acres. Jointly between Slovakia and Hungary, this is the most explored karst region of Europe, with 700 documented caves and a breathtaking variety of plant and animal life.
